Sector Based Work Academies
Sector-Based Work Academies (SBWA) are a way to create a skilled workforce for your business.
Sector-Based Work Academies (SBWA) are a way to create a skilled workforce for your business. The schemes are designed to help meet your immediate and future recruitment needs as well as to recruit a workforce with the right skills to sustain and grow your business. SBWA are also designed to help those individuals who are ready for work, receiving benefits and to secure employment.
A SBWA can last for up to 6 weeks and will contain 3 main components:
- Pre-employment training – this can be tailored to the needs of your business sector
- Work experience placement – this will be carried out at your business and should be of great benefit to the individual and your business
- A guaranteed job interview – for all applicants that take part in the SBWA
An important feature of a SBWA is that it offers a flexible approach and can be adapted to meet the needs of your business. The scheme is particularly useful for young people but is open to jobseekers of all ages.
Participants will remain on their working age benefits throughout the period of SBWA. Jobcentre Plus will pay any travel and childcare costs whilst they are on the work experience placement. There is no direct cost to an employer for Sector-Based Work Academies as the costs are covered by Government funding.
Enterkey Training have successfully delivered SBWA for a variety of employers across a range of different sectors – Health & Social Care, Customer Service and the IT industry to name just a few! We are able to design and tailor the pre-employment training to specifically meet the needs of your business, and we will also source suitable candidates to take care of your recruitment needs for you. The further added bonus is there are no costs to your business for any of this activity – it really is an excellent opportunity for any business!

Employer Case Study – University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
Enterkey Training has a history of forming successful long-standing relationships with Employers across the West Midlands Region. Our provision is designed to meet the demands and requirements of organisations, and our flexible approach means we are able to adapt our training around the needs of any business.
The following case study is an example of a partnership we have formed with a major employer in the West Midlands Region, University Hospitals Birmingham.
As a large employer, one of University Hospitals Birmingham key priorities is to develop the professional and personal development of their staff. In order for their staff to access opportunities, and advanced training for more senior roles, there is a pre-requisite that individuals hold an appropriate English and Maths qualification. Unfortunately, this requirement was proving to be a barrier for some of University Hospitals Birmingham staff.
The partnership between Enterkey Training and University Hospitals Birmingham commenced in 2019. This consists of Functional Skills delivery up to Level 2 standard in English and Maths to NHS staff members, delivered at the Hospital Trust’s premises. To fit with the needs of the employer and to make the training as accessible as possible for NHS employees, Enterkey Training run weekly training sessions from 2 different hospital sites. This allows employees to drop in for their learning sessions either before or after their shifts.
Once the NHS employees have achieved their Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications, they are then able to progress onto further training, potentially progressing their careers. This also provides University Hospitals Birmingham with the workforce they require. An example is the Health Care Assistants that we are currently training who have the career goal is to progress to fully qualified Nurses.
